Education IT Infrastructure Challenges

Technology-enabled education is advancing quickly. School IT infrastructure needs to keep pace with new strategies and solutions that enable the future of education.

Increased Technology Dependence

Use of technology in education has evolved rapidly since computers and tablets were first introduced and schools today are growing more dependent on IT both in the classroom and remotely. Students and teachers rely on IT systems, devices and networks for learning remote education. Education facilities are also increasingly deploying Internet of Things (IoT) devices to enhance security, improve climate control, and reduce energy consumption.

The Next Wave

From virtual reality to smart boards and esports gaming, new technologies are being introduced to enhance the student and teacher experience. These new technologies bring new power requirements that legacy systems might not be able to handle. Without proper protection, these systems are vulnerable to power issues such as surges and sags that would otherwise be unnoticeable. Today’s schools need to be prepared to efficiently protect classroom, administrative, and facility electronics from power-related disruptions.

Aging Facilities, Minimal On-Site Support

Education quality shouldn’t be dependent on facility age, but older buildings present challenges when introducing new solutions. In addition, centralized IT staff can be stretched thin traveling from school to school to deal with technology issues. Today’s IT infrastructure can compensate for many facility issues through solutions such as integrated rack systems that create a temperature-controlled and physically secure environment for IT equipment. A variety of remote monitoring solutions enable centralized management of IT and infrastructure systems to reduce travel by IT staff, increase uptime, and speed troubleshooting.

E-Rate: Take Advantage of this Federal Assistance Program

E-Rate (also known as the Schools and Library Program of the Universal Service Fund) is a budget extender for Public K–12 schools and districts and nonprofit schools that need affordable access to telecommunications and Internet services. Through the federally funded E-rate program, schools are eligible to receive discounts between 20-85% on Vertiv UPS, power distribution, and racks/enclosures.

Check with your local Vertiv office to see if your solution qualifies for the E-rate program.

Vertiv Solutions to Education IT Challenges

Power Protection Solutions

Whether you’re protecting technology systems with a distributed or centralized protection strategy, robust and scalable uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) are the backbone of the education network. They help maintain continuity and prevent equipment damage by providing clean, uninterrupted power to your systems.

Vertiv™ UPS solutions are built to maximize the flexibility, scalability, and efficiency of education IT management. They provide excellent runtimes through the internal, hot-swappable battery and can be configured with external batteries to support longer runtimes. Our runtime calculator will help you configure batteries for your system.

The Vertiv™ Liebert® GXT5 UPS models deliver online double conversion power protection in a compact, reliable design that is ideal for critical applications. Our line-interactive Vertiv™ Liebert® PSI5 UPS Models feature automatic voltage regulation that delivers advanced pure sine wave output on the battery. Vertiv™ UPS systems with valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries are backed by a three-year warranty. Vertiv™ UPS systems with lithium-ion batteries are backed by a five-year warranty.

Both systems are available with the Vertiv™ Power Assurance Package, which takes the burden of UPS maintenance and battery replacement off IT staff and school administrators. And, because Vertiv™ UPS systems are vital to the reliable operation of education technology, they are eligible for e-rate, potentially providing extra funding for infrastructure upgrades.

Distribute Power within the Rack

IT racks help organize and protect IT equipment and rack PDUs provide an ideal solution for distributing power within the rack. Vertiv™ Geist™ intelligent rPDUs can do more than just reliably distribute power. They provide visibility into rack and device power consumption and can even allow you to turn outlets off and on to remotely cycle connected equipment.

Remote Infrastructure Management

Vertiv intelligent infrastructure solutions enable remote monitoring to simplify and streamline IT management. Vertiv Liebert UPS systems can be configured with communication cards to enable UPS monitoring through building or infrastructure management systems or a dedicated app. Vertiv Geist intelligent rPDUs monitor unit and outlet power consumption and can be configured with sensors to enable environmental monitoring within the rack.

For a more comprehensive approach to environmental monitoring, Vertiv™ Environet™ Alert is an easy-to-deploy environment monitoring solution that generates alerts if environmental conditions that could threaten equipment operation exist so you can take action proactively.
